| Did you ever wonder HOW we survived OUR childhood? | | With all the rules, regulations and saftey issues today I often wonder how we all made it to this age! LOL I mean, I don't know about you guys but standing in the backseat and watching the view right behind dad's head was top on my places to be when driving.... not tucked into a car seat until I was 800 pounds or whatever age! And biking? I do seem to recall being on my bike pretty much 24/7 with NO helmet, flying like the wind down a huge hill. Sure I had crashes, wasn't that part of growing up? I never once lost a friend to brain mush! Perhaps a few feet of skin throughout the years were peeled off but otherwise, we were none for the worse! Bike helmets, hockey helmets, skating helmets, knee pads, leg pads, elbow pads, mouth guards, car seats, and the list goes on! Okay, maybe hockey helmets were a good thing eventually in the NHL but otherwise I can't see a whole lot of issue at hand with safety as kids. Are we raising little whimps that cry at a skinned knee?Does it amaze you how now the world is "so much safer"? When in reality, I never recall truly having these UNsafe ways be a real issue and loss of life or limb! What about... | |
| | 1. Wear Protective Gear | | 1. Wear Protective Gear
Protective gear is anything you wear that helps keep you from getting hurt. The gear you wear depends on the sport you play. Helmets are the most common protective gear. They protect your all-important head while you're playing football, hockey, baseball, softball, biking, skateboarding, and in-line skating, just to name a few!Make sure you're wearing the right helmet for your sport. For instance, don't wear your baseball batting helmet when you're playing football! Your helmet should fit snugly but comfortably, and if it has a strap - like a bike helmet does - you need to fasten it. Otherwise, it will fall off when you need it most.Other sports require eye protection, mouth guards, pads, wrist, elbow, and knee guards, and a protective cup (for boys only). And don't forget your feet. Cleats are worn in football, baseball, softball, and soccer. These shoes have special rubber or plastic points on the soles to help your feet grip the ground when you run around.Talk with your parents or your coach to know what gear you need. Then wear that gear whenever you're practicing or playing. | |
