Do you children participate in sports... Read THIS!
My boys both participated in sports from age five through high school. While sports are a very good for teaching children team work, and self discipline while building self esteem, they can be very dangerous. My oldest participated in Pop Warner football for flag years and then a few years of tackle, later moving on to cross country and weight training. The younger participated in Pop Warner through his first year of high school, middle school basketball, then JV ball as a sophomore along with weight training and skateboarding. It turned out that skate boarding was the most dangerous, of course it was unsupervised and he was old enough to be out on his own. In reading the news from Healthier.com today I found surprising is that baseball rates so high in child eye injuries. I think knee pads, elbow pads, and helmets, not eye protection when I think of children in sports."Emergency rooms in the United States treat a sports-related eye injury every 13 minutes. Baseball causes the greatest number of sports-relater eye injuries in children aged 14 and younger, according to the National Eye...
smile - have a super weekend
How did we survive in the 70s? When our prams had the most gorgeous lead based colours. There were no such things as tamper proof bottle tops. Opening kitchen cupboards was a breeze as there were no safety locks on the cupboards. Cycling was a breath of fresh air - without safety helmets, knee pads or elbow pads. And with cardboards or baloons between the spokes to make it sound like a motorbike. We broke arms and legs, lost teeth, got cuts and bruises - nobody complained as we had so much fun. And it wasn't anybody's fault, only ours. When thirsty we would only drink tap water - bottled water was still a mystery, We were showing off how tough we were by how high we would climb trees and then jumping down - that was great fun. We could stay out to play for hours as long as we came back home before dark and in time for dinner. We always walked to school. We had no mobiles, but we always managed to find our friends and relatives - how? no one knows. We ate everything in sight - cakes, chocolate, icecream, sweet sugary drinks. Yet we stayed skinny. If any one of us was lucky to get a coco cola bottle all had a sip from it and nobody picked up any germs. We did not have...
Are You Killing The Fun Of Childhood?
I was born in the 1950's. Children in the 50's and 60's played hard...OUTSIDE. We played in the streets, we were daredevils on bikes and skates, homemade go-carts, homemade skateboards; we had rope-swings high up in the trees; we climbed anything we could get up, including on top of houses. I don't recall one child dying from playing when I was younger. Ok, a few broken arms, scratches, bumps and bruises - but we had fun! I'm asking this because I remember seeing my 5 year-old grandson get ready to ride his bike: helmet with chin guard, elbow pads, knee pads...what a sight. How much fun can you have dressed up like that? Water wings and goggles and a nose clip in the pool! How silly is that? Today I read that kiddie pools in backyards are a bad thing. They are made of plastics and are not good for children's health. I think we have become so over-protective that we are suffocating childhood. They fail to mention in these articles that children are becoming fatter and fatter. We don't mind if they sit in the house all day playing video games and snacking all day. What kind of people are we expecting to raise these days? What kind of life will they lead? Will they be afraid...
power traction kiting/power kiting/stunt kiting/greta fun!!!!!!! try it!!!
yo everyone have you ever had a go on a power kite or traction power kite?for those that don't know they are kites that are great fun that can lift you of the ground, depending on factors of your weight/wind/size of kite and also they can drag you around!!!!like a rag dolly lol!!we started out with a kite called a flexifoil stacker 6 its like a couple of feet'ish wide and a meter'ish long!! its a great power kite for like doing stunts with it in the sky even though it wont pull you across a field or lift you up!! its called a stacker cuz you can stack them on top of each other to make it look better and give you some more power!! there are also diffrent stackers if you wish to go bigger and some of the bigger ones can pull you and possibly lift you!!next we went a bit of a jump right up to a flexifoil blade2 4.9(meters) now wow this is a beast of a kite!! take this out in the wrong sort of wind and you might not be coming home or at least not in one piece lol i heard scary storys when i purchased mine and from my friends that had one before us but it didnt put me of because i knew i would be carefull!! we have had the blade quite a few years now and still love her!! if...
Did you ever wonder HOW we survived OUR childhood?
With all the rules, regulations and saftey issues today I often wonder how we all made it to this age! LOL I mean, I don't know about you guys but standing in the backseat and watching the view right behind dad's head was top on my places to be when driving.... not tucked into a car seat until I was 800 pounds or whatever age! And biking? I do seem to recall being on my bike pretty much 24/7 with NO helmet, flying like the wind down a huge hill. Sure I had crashes, wasn't that part of growing up? I never once lost a friend to brain mush! Perhaps a few feet of skin throughout the years were peeled off but otherwise, we were none for the worse! Bike helmets, hockey helmets, skating helmets, knee pads, leg pads, elbow pads, mouth guards, car seats, and the list goes on! Okay, maybe hockey helmets were a good thing eventually in the NHL but otherwise I can't see a whole lot of issue at hand with safety as kids. Are we raising little whimps that cry at a skinned knee?Does it amaze you how now the world is "so much safer"? When in reality, I never recall truly having these UNsafe ways be a real issue and loss of life or limb! What about you?
How did one survive???
I would like to share with you all a forward that i received today:How did one survive? How did one survive growing up in the 70's, 80's and 90's?We had no seatbelts, no airbags, and sitting in a car was a treat... our baby prams had the most gorgeous lead-based colours... No such thing as tamper proof bottle tops Opening kitchen cupboards were a breeze as safety locks were unheard of.. Cycling was like a breath of fresh air..No safety helmets, knee pads, or elbow pads, with plenty of cardboard between spokes to make it sound like a motorbike... When thirsty, we only drank tap water, bottled water was still a mystery.. We kept busy collecting bits and pieces so we could build all sorts of things..and we were fearless on our bikes even when the brakes failed going downhill.... We were showing off how tough we are, by how high we could climb trees and then jumping down.. it was great fun.. We could stay out to play for hours, as long as we got back before dark, in time for dinner.. We walked to school or sometimes we even rode our bikes. We had no mobile phones, but we always managed to find each other. How?? no one knows. We lost teeth, broke arms and legs, we...
Do you wear a helmet?
Just curious, do you wear a helmet? knee and elbow pads?If you fall, do you wear bandaids? do you cry? do you swear?:-Dt was great fun.. We could stay out to play for hours, as long as we got back before dark, in time for dinner.. We walked to school or sometimes we even rode our bikes. We had no mobile phones, but we always managed to find each other. How?? no one knows. We lost teeth, broke arms and legs, we got cuts and bruises and bloody noses...nobody complained as we had so much fun, it wasn't anybody's fault, only ours.. We ate everything in sight.. cakes, bread, chocolate, icecream, sweet sugary drinks, yet we stayed skinny by fooling around. And if one of us were lucky to find a 1 litre coco cola bottle, we all had a swag from it and guess what? nobody picked up any germs... We did not have playstations, mp3, Nintendo's, Ipods, video games, 109 cable tv channels, dvd's, home theatres, mobile phones, home computers, laptops, chat rooms, internet, etc.. but we had REAL FRIENDS!!! We called on friends to come out and play, never rang the door bell.. just went around the back. We loved being let loose in the big bad world...
Do you make your child wear a helmet and pads when they ride their bikes?
Kids are supppose to wear a bike helmet whenever they ride thier bike to protect their skull if they fall knee and elbow pads are also reccemmended I see alot of children riding their bikes to school that don't wear either one. I will admit my 10 year old son does not wear them and he has wrecked his bike and hit his head on the street we were lucky he just ended up with really bad bruises and scrapes. My 4 year old daughter just got a bike for her birthday and I am not letting her back on it until she has at least a helmet! Do you make your kids wear helmets?t was great fun.. We could stay out to play for hours, as long as we got back before dark, in time for dinner.. We walked to school or sometimes we even rode our bikes. We had no mobile phones, but we always managed to find each other. How?? no one knows. I'm so angry I could scream
but at the same time I am so very thankful. I know God was watching over my youngest son last night.First let me share my day with you. It was an absolutely glorious spring day in Michigan; just a slight breeze, temperatures in the 70s, and the sun shining all day. I decided it was time to get outside and a good time to start cleaning up the yard. I got addicted to this and started with burning tree branches - the lawn was covered with them from winter storms. By late afternoon I was physically exhausted, not finished but just couldn't do anymore. I retired to my bed and laptop to rest and relax planning to get to sleep early which I was sure would happen after all the exercise and fresh air.Around 7 my youngest son, 16 next week, banged into my room "Mom you gotta see this" and sticking his horribly skinned up arm in my face. From there he dropped his pants enough to expose the abrasions on his hip then hiked up his pant leg to show me the rare meat of his knee... He was a mess but announced it wasn't bad, the only thing that hurt was his hand on the opposite side of his body.He quickly explained he had wiped out on his skateboard and before I could say anything...
Is it easter or christmas?
So the easter bunny is on his way. I remember last year how much money i spent on the kids for easter. It was crazy. they each got brand new bikes, helmets, knee and elbow pads, toys clothes and all kinds of goodies. This was between there fathers family and mine. So this year i've decided that they will get 2 small toys each and a small basket of treats. But it seems im not the only one that goes crazy at easter, its like a new trend or something. I've asked family not to get the boys much because I dont want them to expect this every year as it will become more expensive every time. So how do you spend easter. Is it like christmas at your house to? the abrasions on his hip then hiked up his pant leg to show me the rare meat of his knee... He was a mess but announced it wasn't bad, the only thing that hurt was his hand on the opposite side of his body.He quickly explained he had wiped out on his skateboard and before I could say anything headed out the back door where a small group of friends were waiting and off they went - all on skateboards.About 9:30 when I was barely keeping my eyes open (I'd been up since 4:30 a.m.) he comes...
